Arborland Montessori School Demonstration
Date: May 8, 2014
Time: 5:30 - 8:30 P.M.
# of Members: ~6
At Arborland Montessori Children’s Academy, the members of WHS Robotics arrived to hold a demonstration during the academy’s Open House. On May 8th from 5:30 to 8:30 P.M., FTC Team 542, FLL Team 66, and WHS VEX Robotics all arrived to demonstrate robotics to the general audience and inspire students of younger age to participate in these particular areas. Besides robotics, the general field of engineering was also discussed to increase the children’s awareness of STEM opportunities. The teams set up robots that participants could maneuver using remote control. Boards from competitions were also set up to display the progress our teams have made throughout the year to the audience.
With sixty or more parents and children at this event, participants came to recognize the idea of robotics and what it has to offer. Parents were surprised and glad to see that schools are inspiring kids of younger age to pursue engineering. Some parents were interested into starting a Jr. FLL Team or FLL Team, so we provided a flyer and information on the FIRST website for doing so. Though older kids were more attracted to the faster VEX robots rather than the clunkier LEGO ones, the students still appreciated every demonstration.
The Arborland Montessori Children’s Academy Demonstration a local demonstration. We attend these demonstrations to inspire the public and develop a stable connection between the community and FIRST. For the Arborland demonstration, there were some areas for improvement. For example, better preparation could have allowed more kids access to driving the robots without a long queue. All in all, however, this demonstration only stands as a learning process for the WHS Robotics Club by showcasing opportunities for engineering to students and the general public.
