Los Angeles FRC Regional Demonstration

WHS Robotics FLL Team 66 and FTC Team 542 presented robotics demonstrations at the LA FRC Regionals in the Long Beach Arena. As we were early, we went to watch part of the FRC competition and observe the bustling activity around the pit areas. Later, we returned to purchase lunch before the rush of all of the FRC teams and began to set up our demonstration area. Many people ranging from children to adults passed by and observed our demonstration of the FLL Nature’s Fury field and FTC Block Party! field. Both teams set up posterboards used during the competition season for passerby to learn about the different sections of FIRST.
FLL Team 66 brought in robots that they had made and taught visitors both young and old alike how to control them via custom NXT remote controls that they had made as well. This provided our young observers with a hands-on experience with the robot. As the children interacted with the robot, we explained to the various adults present about FLL, including a breakdown of the three parts of its competitions and how they could get involved. We also provided information to many parents, teachers, and other adults interested in finding a team for their children and even starting their own team.
FTC Team 542 showcased their robot, Rob, from the Block Party! season, as well as Rob 2.0’s swerve drive. As there was limited space, we were only able to set up half of the FTC field; regardless, the exhibition interested passerby, and many were interested in starting their own FIRST teams. Many participants from FIRST programs came over and rooted us on for our hard work.
Some members took a break from their shifts and took a peek at the FRC competition pits. Teams were energized and ready to chase after the first place win. Although we weren’t incorporated with the competition, we did feel the pressure and suspense during matches between various teams.
Overall, our demonstration at the LA FRC Regionals was not only very enjoyable, but a valuable learning experience. From observations made during the demo, we came up with more ideas as to how to improve our demonstrations. We could design a posterboard introducing others to FLL that would be reused every year. We could design our own handouts explaining what FLL is instead as well. All in all, the opportunity to demonstrate at the event was rewarding.
