Middle School Science Olympics Demonstration
Date: May 10, 2014
Time: 8:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M.
# of Members: 9
The FLL, FTC, and VEX teams participated in a demo at the annual Middle School Science Olympics hosted at Haskell Middle School. Our aim was to encourage students to become interested in robotics, sign up for our summer RoboCamp, and possibly start their own teams.
Students stopped by the demo area during lulls during the Olympics to control demonstration robots and learn more about Robotics in general. Team members passed joysticks around so that every student could have a chance to drive a robot. Students enjoyed controlling the demo robots and found excitement in “battling” their fellow drivers using the freeze tag and triangle bots. Many parents who stopped by to watch the demo were interested in RoboCamp and a few asked how their children could start or join a team. The demo area received a large number of visitors as it was located near both the stage area and the entrance to the school. At least one hundred students, twenty parents, and ten teachers showed up at the demo area. Many of the students enjoyed the hands on experience and were interested in STEM, so the demo area was busy with exception of the opening and closing ceremonies of the science olympics.
Occasionally, parts fell of the robots being driven and brochures, posters, and trophies fell of the table due to the wind. In general, however, the event went well and students, parents, and teachers enjoyed the demo.
