On May 23, Whitney High Robotics Club went to Gonsalves Elementary, a medium-sized school which several team members previously attended, in an effort to spread the word of the work the team has been doing.
Everything set up and ready to go as eager, but unsure fifth and sixth graders came pouring into Gonsalves’s multipurpose room. The children’s faces all lit up as we explained how we design and build our own robots. Following the introductory presentation, the kids were given a chance to interact with the robots of our various teams.
We divided the room into thirds. In one corner, VRC had set up a ring for students to play freeze tag with robots. The students became so engaged to the point that they passionately chanted, causing surrounding kids to notice. In another corner, FTC set up a triage of boards explaining FTC and had Windsor, our championship Ring It Up! robot, on display. In the last corner, FLL set up two stations - one station, a field where the children could drive remote-controlled robots while team members explained FLL, another station, members quizzing students with math problems for drawn Schmoes from our drawing robot.
When everyone reconvened, we handed the students leaflets, telling them more about FIRST and how they could get started during the summer at our RoboCamp. We provided a glimpse of what FIRST can provide, inspiring the kids to express their own ingenuity through robotics.
